Early Jesus

  • Click here to learn about the oldest known icon of the founder, fully half a millennium after his life.
  • Click here to see an ancient fresco, a little closer to the original.
  • Click here to learn about a possible (miraculous or fraudulent?) ancient-contemporary version.
What are your own observations and thoughts about this ancient religious iconography?

I'm glad that the images are at least fairly consistent. They each show a young man with a long beard and long hair. Perhaps because of their consistency we can assume that the pictures are fairly accurate.

Most of the earliest Jesus iconography is indeed fairly consistent, as you observe, Cameron. At the least, it shows that mainstream ideas about what Jesus 'should' look like were systematized early on. At the most, these artifacts might well give us a glimpse into what Jesus DID look like!

It seems that the people who created these works of art all had an "idea" of what Jesus looked like. I am hesitant to accept the mainstream image of Jesus, because for all we know the image of a nicely tanned "caucasian" bearded looking man could have been created.
