The Amazing Daniel!
Click on any or all of the links below to view the close-calls that faithful Daniel and his friends suffer at the hands of the evil Babylonians:
Daniel 1 (the unclean food)
Daniel 2 (the king's dream)
Daniel 3 (the fiery furnace)
What kinds of purposes might such fantastic tales have served for their earliest audiences?

I think these stories were written as a spiritual boost. When you consider the times they were living in they were in sore need of a reminder that Yahweh was still with them. These stories were there to remind the people that they still had wisdom in them, they still could keep their faith, and that Yahweh is still looking out for them.
The movies were cool to watch, it was hard to read the text going by so fast. These tales could have served as a type of Biblical entertainment. Generally if a story is awesome to hear, people will remember it. The point could have been for it to be memorable enough for people to remember it and its religious message.

I agree, this story seems to have been written to uplift people and give them some hope. The hope that their God is with them always- even in fire.
